Mokai Station, the working farm on which Mokai Cottage Retreat resides, was originally leased by the government until it was purchased by the Ridderford family in the 1920’s. Since that date the farm has only seen two owners.
Supposedly the highest, privately owned farmland in the North Island, Mokai Station provides a natural gateway to the Ruahine Forest Park and the surrounding areas.
The immediate area is steeped in history, The region was visited often by the famous printer, missionary, explorer, naturalist and politician William Colenso and the road into the cottage has a memorial dedicated to his memory.
